Peng Tings

Three minutes six. UK grime over boom bap, 130 BPM, sub bass and long gaps. Every bar in it carries two meanings at the same time and the video never tells you which one. Written and produced by Samson Joseph.

What it's about

Peng means top of the range. A peng ting is a beautiful woman and it is also the best thing in the room, and the whole record sits in the gap between the two. Not one, not the other. Both, on purpose, for three minutes.

Loud, but I've never once heard her raise her voice. She's a strain, and I mean that with the utmost respect. Top shelf, back of the shop, and you still have to ask nicely. Every line works twice and it is never explained.

All for them bundles. Cash bundles, hair bundles, and the crop growing in the back room. One word doing three jobs in a single shot.

It closes on the only thing in it that means one thing. I don't chase a ting. I make it nice. Then I just sit in it.

How it was made

Every frame in it is designed and directed by Nosmas Beats, and every single one of them moves. Not a still frame anywhere in it. London throughout: a palm house at night, a coastal campsite, a lock up under a railway arch, a terraced street swallowed by greenery.

The long gaps in the track are the point. The vocal drops out for sixteen seconds in one stretch and the picture has to carry it alone, so that stretch is a single unbroken move down the middle of a glasshouse in the rain.

Nothing in it is filmed and nothing in it is stock. Same characters, same city, same story running underneath everything else on this site.
